History

New Culture Center in the Midwest (NCCM) is a nonprofit, cultural and services organization that was established in February 2001by Chinese-speaking immigrants committed to fostering cultural exchange between Chinese and Western societies.

With an influx of Chinese immigrants settling in the United States—over 2.4 million Chinese Americans, and approximately 16,500 in the Twin Cities (Census 2000)—systematic discussions of American culture with the Chinese-speaking community become highly desirable. The actual number of Chinese immigrants is believed to be much higher due to a cultural reason: many Chinese people may not feel comfortable completing official questionnaires.

NCCM provides comprehensive and bi-directional cultural services to the public by:

  • hosting cultural workshops in English on traditional Chinese culture and contemporary Chinese society
  • providing systematic discussions on and explanations of American culture to soften the culture shocks for immigrants and visitors from Chinese-speaking countries
  • sponsoring performing arts that foster an appreciation and better understanding of Chinese culture
